Week 1 with the new Surface 3

Microsoft-Surface-Pro-3

I’ve been a HUGE fan of the Microsoft Surface since the first one I got back in October of 2012. I started out with the Surface RT. I loved the device but it had limitations. They were the same limitations that have plagued the Windows Phones: apps. Or should I say the lack of? In 2013, the first “Pro” version of the Surface came out. It could do everything but it also had issues, including a poor battery life and heavy device weight.

Since that time, I’ve continued to use every generation of Surface along the way. The Surface Pro 2 and then the Surface Pro 3. The Pro 3 was the best Surface to date. It could easily replace your laptop or desktop as it did for me. But what I found is, of all the devices I’ve had, I still use my old Surface RT the most when I have a desire for a portable solution or tablet. I found myself wondering, “Why is that my device of choice?” What I came to realize is that it was the best combination of tools that I use on a regular basis. It allows me to run Office, browse the internet, has a great battery life, and on top of all of that, it is the perfect size for me. So when I found out about the new Surface 3 that was coming out, I couldn’t have been more excited. It was closer to the size of my original Surface, slightly thinner, supports a pen, and runs the full version of Windows 8.1. Possibly the best part for me is it also has a docking station. So, I convinced our CEO, Mark Christie, that I “needed” one of these and my pre-order was placed.
So let’s fast forward to this week. On Tuesday, May 5th the UPS delivery came and it felt like Christmas!!! I hooked everything up and started to get it setup. Unfortunately, I ran in to a snag right away. It comes with Windows 8.1 Core instead of Professional. What that means is I couldn’t join it to our domain environment. From my perspective that was a miss. It was easily fixed with a Windows in place upgrade but that was another $100 that I didn’t expect to spend.

Once I got past the initial setup and configuration, it’s been good. The battery life has been great and I’ve been able to make it through the day without charging. The size seems to be perfect for me and the performance has been good. The docking station has enough ports and really works great. I think this device is perfect for most users. It brings the price down to the point that it’s comparable to traditional laptops but with all the added benefits that a Surface has from a tablet standpoint.

In closing, if you’re in the market for a new device, make sure you take a hard look at the Surface lineup. Between the Surface Pro 3 and the new Surface 3, I’m confident you’ll find one that fits your needs and exceeds your expectations.
