NAV Support: Fix for Error while Creating Control Add-In

I would like to share information about an interesting issue that I ran into today with Dynamics NAV 2016.
I just installed NAV 2016 Cumulative Update 4 on Innovia’s servers. Our setup has the service tier on one server and the role tailored client on a different server. I suspect that the issue would not have occurred if the two were on the same server.

After doing so, I got an error “Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. …” This error occurred when I attempted to launch the NAV 2016 Cumulative Update 4 role tailored client executable. Here is a screen shot of the error.

dynamics nav control add-in error
When I went to the event log on the computer, where I was running the NAV role tailored client, I found the following error message: “An error occurred while creating the control add-in for "Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client.BusinessChart;PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35". Error message: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.”

On further investigation, I found that the error would not occur if I ran the role tailored client at administrator. However, it came back as soon as I ran the role tailored client normally (i.e. not as administrator).

I was able to completely resolve the error by copying the BusinessChart folder from the service tier program Add-ins folder (C:Program FilesMicrosoft Dynamics NAV90ServiceAdd-ins”) on the server where the NAV service tier was installed to the role tailored client Add-ins folder (C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Dynamics NAV90RoleTailored ClientAdd-ins ) on the computer where I was running the role tailored client. Note that the error message in the event log referred to the Business Chart add-in.
