Project Management: What is the Purpose? Is it Needed?

As many of us have noticed, Project Management is growing at a rapid rate and being utilized by businesses of all shapes and sizes. Many may wonder, why is such a field is growing at such an exponential rate? What is the purpose of Project Management? Is Project Management important for my business? Many of us do not realize that Project Management is in many areas of our lives. Whether it is making our bed or building a road, we all use Project Management every day and it comes in many forms. From initiation, planning, executing, monitoring, resourcing, and closing out of a project, Project Management provides the framework to help accomplish the goals and objectives needed for a successful project.

Project Management

In my experience as a Project Manager, many business projects I have worked on involve large scale planning that affects every department or aspect of a business. Because of this, implementation of such projects may mean dealing with a wide range of departments such as development, accounting, and HR. As a project manager, my role is to ensure that resourcing is allocated across departments as well as to devise plans that assist in the assimilation of work across departments. This is critical in ensuring that the project meets budget, scope, and timeline goals as well as the satisfaction of key stakeholders.

When creating a timeline for a project, as Project Manager, I must take into consideration current project activities in conjunction with ongoing business activities, resource availability, risks, and budgets. Many times this requires me to work with multiple departments, business stakeholders, and managers so as to fully understand the scope of the work at hand. This also allows me to have a clear picture into the project as a whole so as to propose the best timeline that meets the needs of all departments involved as well as staying true to the goals and objectives of the business stakeholders. Once this timeline is set, it is then my responsibility as the Project Manager to hold all resources accountable to stay true to the timeline so as to meet the timeline and budget goals of the project.

One of the most important roles that I play as a Project Manager is to ensure the project stays true to budget goals. A good project manager identifies possible risks and anticipated costs early in the project so as to develop a realistic and obtainable budget. They also stay true to budget goals by using resource conflict solutions, coordinating tasks appropriately, and clearly identifying deliverables needed by resources and when these deliverables are needed. This, in turn, reduces inefficiencies in productivity, lack of understanding across resources, and ineffective time management. Without this, the project timeline can easily slip, which can result in a project being over-budget.

All in all, the Project Management field is growing at an exponential rate. Reason for this is due to the size and complexities of many project being implemented in today’s world. Project Managers, such as myself, ensure that the project at hand meets the budget, scope and timeline goals of all parties involved. Ultimately, Project Managers are critical to the success of projects in today’s complex world.
